Reading is Thinking
You are looking at "Reading Thoughts" board. In third grade we focus a lot of our workshop time to learning and practicing reading comprehension strategies. As a teacher I truly believe that students need to think deeply about their reading every time they pick up a book or article. We will use this board to share some of our deepest thinking. Above the 2, 3, 4 will be examples of how they can level up their thinking.
We will be using a workshop approach for reading and writing. In these workshops students will have a lot of independent work time, group time or one-on-one time with the teacher. Students will set goals and receive strategies and tools to reach those goals. I love the workshop approach for the independence and the ability to meet the students where their needs are the greatest.

Our Class Library
Our classroom library is the hub of our classroom! The books are divided by author, theme, or genre. Individual books are also color coded and leveled. These levels are a guideline for kids to help them chose a few good fit books. These books are kept in their book boxes and used during their independent reading time. The books boxes will also hold their reading journals in which the students will record their reading responses.
Alternative Seating
Students have a lot of choice in 3rd grade. One choice they have is deciding where they work best. It might be on the carpet, in the library, on a stool, by a table or standing at the standing desk. We have different zones for different volume levels. For example, the chill zone below is a level 0 voice volume, where as the rug (pictured right) will have a voice volume of 1. Thus making multiple choices for the students.
We work hard to help the students discover their best focus spot.
