Weekly Expectations for Word Work and Spelling
During this Daily 5 Round students will be using words for Words Their Way. There are a number of activities that students can chose from during this round. Rainbow writing, magnetic letters, wiki spelling, dice writing, stamping words, word wall riddles, and web sites are just a few of the activities students can do. Students will receive their word sorts on Monday and follow the activities listed below.
Spelling Tests: We do not have the normal list of spelling words. Students will be tested on the spelling patterns of their word sort. Since these are individualized, they are just what the student needs. Their tests will be 10-12 words total. Five to seven of the words will be from their sorts and five to seven will be new words that follow the spelling pattern of their sort. Our hope is to teach students not to memorize certain words, but to apply the knowledge of their pattern to new words. That is why it is very important to practice the sorts many times during the week and to be word detectives and find the patterns as books are being read!
This year students will also be tested on their high frequency words. During a Word Work Round students will work on their sorts and then practice the high frequency words they need to know. You can find these words in their word study part of their portfolio. Once they have practiced 10 words four times they are allowed to test out their words with a parent helper. Then they can move on to the next 10 words they need to work on in their lists. This is very individualize for each student.
